A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance

f.eks. is pleased to announce A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance - a sonic art project and audio essay by artist and composer Morten Poulsen (DK).
The project takes its point of departure in the Danish national government’s controversial decision to build a highway across Egholm - a rural island located in the Limfjord waters near the city of Aalborg, Denmark. Egholm is often promoted by the local municipality as a calm and silent refuge for humans, and as a unique natural setting just outside the post-industrial urban periphery. The island is home to much animal and plant life that will be greatly impacted by the mega-project Egholmlinjen. Therefore, to understand the place from other perspectives, in A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance, Morten Poulsen listens together with the island - its inhabitants and local citizens who organize against the highway, but also the fauna and flora - including a very special willow tree. Weaving together a post-human sensation of entanglement, the audio essay proposes a change in our listening position, that can afford us with means to create new narratives about the relation between ourselves and the environments we are a part of.
Morten Poulsen works at the intersection between sound art, artistic research, social engagement, and activism. With sound, listening, and participatory-based processes, he explores socio-political structures, often focusing on gender, power relations, climate change, and the ways in which they intersect. His artistic work has been shown across different art institutions such as Kunsthal Aarhus, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Kunstbygningen i Vrå, SixtyEight Art Institute, c4 projects, and Skjold Contemporary in Copenhagen (DK). His artistic research has been presented at the PARSE Biennial for Artistic Research, Gothenburg (SE), and Seismograf (DK). As a musician, Morten Poulsen has toured internationally with the underwater concert AquaSonic. He was educated at the International Center for Knowledge in the Arts in Copenhagen (2022) and graduated with an MA in Music Creation from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in 2021.
A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance is the second episode of the ongoing program S for Sound, S for Solidarity (SfS, SfS) - an audio infrastructure for artists co-founded by f.eks. and artist Yazan Khalili in 2023. SfS, SfS seeks to utilize sonic and radio programming to highlight artistic, socio-political, and cultural conversations in relation to localized power dynamics and broader geo-political contexts, launching public sonic artworks, listening sessions, and radio broadcasts that connect Northern Denmark to wider global contexts in collaboration with partner Radio alHara.

Projektet tager udgangspunkt i den danske regerings kontroversielle beslutning om at anlægge en motorvej henover Egholm - en ø i Limfjorden nær Aalborg. Egholm promoveres ofte af den lokale kommune, som et beroligende og stille tilflugtsmål for mennesker, og som et unikt naturmiljø, lige uden for storbyen. Øen er hjemsted for meget dyre- og planteliv, der vil blive stærkt påvirket af mega-projektet Egholmlinjen. Derfor, for at forstå stedet fra et andet perspektiv, lytter Morten Poulsen i A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance sammen med øen - dens indbyggere og lokale borgere, der har organiseret sig imod motorvejen, samt dens flora og fauna - herunder et helt særligt piletræ. Gennem oplevelsen af posthuman sammenfletning, fremstiller audio-essayet en alternativ position at lytte fra, med øje for hvordan man kan skabe nye fortællinger i forhold til de omgivende miljøer, vi er en del af.
Morten Poulsen arbejder i krydsfeltet mellem lydkunst, kunstnerisk forskning, social praksis og aktivisme. Gennem brugen af lyd, lytning og deltager-baserede processer, undersøger han, ofte med fokus på køn, magtforhold og klimaforandringer, og hvordan disse socio-politiske strukturer interagere med hinanden. Han har udstillet på tværs af forskellige kunstinstitutioner såsom Kunsthal Aarhus, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Kunstbygningen i Vrå, SixtyEight Art Institute, c4 projects og Skjold Contemporary i København. Han har præsenteret sin kunstneriske forskning ved PARSE Biennial for Artistic Research, Gøteborg (SE) og Seismograf (DK). Som musiker, har han turneret internationalt med undervandskoncerten AquaSonic. Han er uddannet ved Center for Kunstnerisk Viden og Udvikling i København (2022) og har en MA i Music Creation fra Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium i København i 2021.
A Different Set of Ears: The Egholm Alliance er andet afsnit i det audio-baserede program S for Sound, S for Solidarity (SfS, SfS) - en lyd infrastruktur for kunstnere stiftet af f.eks. og kunstneren Yazan Khalili i 2023. SfS, SfS benytter et lyd- og radio format til at understøtte kunstneriske, socio-politiske og kulturelle dialoger, der både omhandler lokale magt dynamikker og bredere geo-politiske emner, gennem lanceringen af soniske kunstværker, lyttesessioner og radioudsendelser, som i samarbejde med Radio alHara, forbinder Nordjylland med en større global kontekst.
