Mads Borre: Sissy Morphology
13.th of September – 31st of October 2024

In collaboration with ARoS, Kunsthal Aarhus, Godsbanen, and Aarhus Visual Arts Center, Jyllands-Posten and Politikens Forhal proudly present the exhibition Sissy Morphology by Aarhus Art Prize winner Mads Borre.

Borre poetically delves into the many facets of queerness: the unruliness of nature, the untamed spirit of love, and mythical creatures merge within the exhibition, reflecting the ambiguous, vibrant mosaic that forms our world. Tender infatuation and desire bloom in steel, silk velvet, and resin.

Simultaneously, the exhibition addresses how past traumas within the LGBTQ+ community are deeply embedded in the body and passed down to future generations. Art critic Mathias Kryger highlights in his writings on the installation A Thousand Lost Handkerchiefs how media historically contributed to the marginalization of homosexuals, particularly during the AIDS crisis. Like ghost hunters, the works trace the emotional undercurrents in both historical and contemporary societal debates on gender and identity—debates that media houses, like the one Politikens Forhal is placed in, facilitates to this day.

Mads Borre graduated from The Jutland Art Academy and Newcastle School of Art. He has exhibited and performed at ARoS, O-Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Bergen Kunsthall, Museum KØN, Kunsthal Aarhus, and Den Frie Udstillingsbygning. Alongside winning the Aarhus Art Prize Solo Award in 2023, he was also awarded the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Talent Prize in 2024.

Aarhus Art Prize is organized by Kunsthal Aarhus, Godsbanen, Aarhus Visual Arts Center, Jyllands-Posten, and ARoS, with the support of the Købmand Herman Salling Foundation and the Jyllands-Posten Foundation. The exhibition is further supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, the Færch Foundation, the Gottfred & Gerda Eickhoff Foundation, and Aarhus Municipality.
